This daunting building was built in 1702, as a place a prison and place of execution and quickly became known as the Gates Of Hell by the locals. Where brutality and torture were common place, Children as young as 6 years old mixed with hardened criminals. But in many cases it was the prison staff that were the most brutal and sadistic. Indeed local historians believe the gaol to be one of the cruellest, most historically shameful places in Ireland.
