Newcastle

Castle Keep was built by Henry II between 1168 - 1178 and is one of the finest surviving example of a Norman keep in the country. The history of the land the keep is built on goes way back into pre-history, with relics from the stone age found in recent archaeological excavations. The Castle has witnessed many turbulent times throughout its history, the siege of 1644 was a particularly bloody time in the castles history. Other uses which have undoubtedly added to the ghostly goings on behind the walls of the keep are county Gaol, courts and cellars for a local hostelry.
